 | A study about meal vouchers anno 2015NFC technology brings virtual vouchers at your fingertips |
Many companies today are using paper-based vouchers such meal vouchers, gift vouchers or coupons to reward their employees. Mostly these have an extra-legal benefit. The fact that these vouchers only exist in a paper version entails some disadvantages as printing and processing (collection, reading, clearing) are time-consuming and thus quite costly. Moreover, there’s the obvious ecological impact. These inconveniences can be tackled using an NFC-enabled mobile phone as storage medium and payment facilitator for electronic vouchers. A two-year research project analyzed the possibilities of replacing paper vouchers with an NFC-based alternative, enabling consumers to receive vouchers on their mobile phone, pay with them and even transfer them to another mobile phone. The study was conducted by IBBT, a research institute of the Belgian government including 5 university groups, in close collaboration with companies active in the payment industry Clear2Pay/Integri, Keyware and Accor Services. At the closing event of this NFC Voucher Study Project, that took place on 5 March 2010, we presented the findings of the different aspects that have been investigated such as usability, legal aspects, security, business model, applications, and more. Moreover, an end-to-end demonstrator was developed showcasing how we could use our meal vouchers in the future.
